Drei Maschinen, drei Piloten, je ein Passagier: die beiden Cessna 172 HB-CKG und HB-CYH und die DA40 HB-SGY starteten bei herrlichem Wetter in Zürich. Südwärts über den Wegpunkt Sierra am Zürichsee, dann Richtung Gotthard. Schon beim Überqueren des Passes war klar: Ambrì hatte sich angekündigt – rund um den Platz reger Betrieb, die ersten Maschinen im Anflug. Gebrieft war Piste 28, wegen des Windes war aber Runway 10 in Use. Also ins Tal einfliegen, Downwind 28, am Talende umdrehen, auf 5'000 ft sinken und in den Downwind 10 einfädeln. Unsere dritte 172 schaffte es gerade noch rein, bevor der Rest ins Holding musste.

Three aircraft, three pilots, one passenger each: the two Cessna 172s HB-CKG and HB-CYH and the DA40 HB-SGY departed Zürich in glorious weather. Southbound via the Sierra waypoint on Lake Zürich, then toward the Gotthard. Crossing the pass it was already clear Ambrì had announced itself – busy traffic all around, the first aircraft on approach. We had briefed runway 28, but the wind meant runway 10 was in use. So into the valley, downwind 28, turn at the valley end, descend to 5,000 ft and slot into the downwind for 10. Our third 172 just made it in before the rest were sent into the hold.

Nach der Landung wurde es fast choreografisch: bis ans Pistenende rollen, dann hinter rund zehn wartenden Maschinen in einer kleinen Schlangenformation über die Piste zum Grass Parking. Ein Pilot durfte noch zum Ramp Check – Papiere und Vorbereitung tadellos, souverän bestanden. Dann der angenehme Teil: Getränke, Bratwurst, und möglichst schnell ein Platz im Gras unter einer DC-3. Von dort liess sich das grösste Fly-In der Schweiz bestens beobachten: vom modernen GA-Flugzeug über zahlreiche Experimentals bis zu Oldtimern und Twins war praktisch alles vertreten. Besondere Highlights: eine rote Antonov An-2, die silberne Swissair-DC-3 und jede Menge zweimotorige Klassiker.

After landing it turned almost choreographic: roll to the runway end, then follow some ten waiting aircraft in a little snaking line across the runway to grass parking. One pilot got a ramp check – papers and preparation impeccable, passed with ease. Then the good part: drinks, bratwurst, and a spot in the grass under a DC-3 as fast as possible. From there, the best seat at Switzerland's largest fly-in: modern GA, countless experimentals, vintage taildraggers and twins – practically everything. Highlights: a red Antonov An-2, the polished Swissair DC-3 and plenty of twin-engine classics.

Um 15 Uhr hiess es zurück. Der Abflug verlief unkompliziert; nachdem sich der Pulk einmal sortiert hatte, teilte sich der Verkehr rasch – ein Teil über den Gotthard, andere Richtung Süden. Für uns ging es nach Norden. In Zürich wartete eine kleine Überraschung: wegen der Street Parade war die Route Sierra – der direkteste Weg von Süden – gesperrt. Ganz entgehen lassen wollten wir uns das wohl grösste Techno-Festival der Welt aber nicht – also so nah an die CTR heran, wie es erlaubt war, für einen Blick von oben. Dann über Whiskey zurück und alle drei Maschinen ganz normal auf Piste 28 – natürlich mit unterschiedlich ambitionierten Short Approaches. Wer den kürzesten erwischte, bleibt an dieser Stelle offen.

At 3 p.m. it was time to head back. The departure was straightforward; once the pack had sorted itself out the traffic split quickly – some over the Gotthard, others south. We went north. Zürich had a small surprise in store: because of the Street Parade, the Sierra route – the most direct way in from the south – was closed. Not wanting to miss the world's largest techno festival entirely, we edged as close to the CTR as allowed for a look from above. Then back via Whiskey and all three aircraft onto runway 28 as normal – with variously ambitious short approaches. Who pulled off the shortest stays undisclosed.
